Possums are a protected native species under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, regulated by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) — not SA Health. Trapping or handling a possum without a DEW permit is an offence, and the conditions attached to that permit are strict about how and where a possum can legally be released.
Under a DEW Trap and Release permit, a possum can only be trapped inside the roof or building itself — not the garden — and must be released on the same property, generally within about 50 metres of capture. Off-site relocation, transport to bushland, or killing a possum are not permitted. Be wary of any operator who offers to "relocate it far away" — that's not how the permit works.
